A Place for Every Child: My First Experience with First Christian Church’s Special Needs Ministry
When I first stepped into First Christian Church (FCC) Santa Maria, I knew something special was happening here. Their heart for children with special needs is not only evident — it’s woven into the very fabric of their ministry. For families who often feel overlooked or stretched thin, FCC provides a Sunday morning haven where every child is seen, valued, and welcomed with open arms.
My First Sunday in the Ministry
On my very first Sunday volunteering, I was amazed by the thoughtful way this ministry has been designed. The children gather in an unusually delightful garden space — a safe outdoor area with a playground, sandbox, and shade coverings. It’s a place where laughter, learning, and God’s love come together in the most natural way.
Guided by the Pastor Matt Hill, who shepherds this ministry, the children enjoy a short service with prayer and a simple, heartfelt message before their activity and playtime. It’s not just activity — it is worship designed especially for them, with a rhythm that helps each child connect in their own way.
I was honored to help guide and play alongside the kids, encouraging them in the little moments: laughter with friends, gentle reassurance when things felt overwhelming, and celebrating even the smallest successes. Watching their joy was unforgettable — and it reminded me that faith is best lived out through love in action.
Why This Ministry Matters
For families of children with special needs, attending church can sometimes feel daunting. FCC removes those barriers by offering a dedicated program tailored just for these children. Parents can worship with peace of mind, knowing their kids are cared for, understood, and included.
This ministry doesn’t just “provide childcare” — it cultivates belonging. Every child, regardless of ability, gets to experience God’s love in community. That’s a gift beyond measure.
Connecting My Calling with FCC
As someone with specialized training in respite, behavioral and enrichment care, I’ve spent years connecting with children of all abilities. To be able to bring those gifts into a ministry like this is a beautiful opportunity to serve. What I do through Double Joy Respite feels seamlessly connected to what FCC is doing on Sunday mornings.
I left that first Sunday knowing I was in the right place — both to serve and to grow.
